Tanzania Bus Crash Survivor Receives HHI Wheelchair

On May 14, 2017, three injured Tanzanian children were transported by a Samaritan’s Purse DC-8 aircraft from Tanzania to the United States for surgery and medical care. The children were the only survivors of a horrific May 6 bus crash that took the lives of 35 others. Three missionaries working in Tanzania with Siouxland Tanzania Education Medical Ministries (STEMM) encountered the bus crash by chance, and helped to recover the three young survivors. The STEMM team then worked with Samaritan’s Purse to organize the transportation of the children to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City for intensive medical treatment.

Hope Haven International provided a wheelchair to one of these children, Doreen (above), equipping her with mobility in her recovery process. With multiple fractures and near complete neurologic loss from the accident initially, she is now making large strides in her recovery according to the STEMM website. Recent updates report that the children returned home to Tanzania on August 16 and all three are recovering well.
